Hackaday Prize 2017 Is Giving Away $250,000 for the Next Big (Useful) Thing

Global hacking community website Hackaday is calling for the curious, the creative, the determined. The Hackaday Prize is for creating for social change in order to transform the world go and awarding prizes for $250,000 in the process. Using your hardware and programming knowledge on top of your scientific, design, and mechanical abilities, participants are asked to innovate to make an impact in peoples’ lives.

It’s time to leverage your talent and find solutions to address a problem facing humanity today. With a new technical design challenge every 5 weeks, contestants will be expanding the frontiers of knowledge and engineering.

Participants can design an impactful project that suits them, or collaborate with a team to do it. With hackaday’s global collaboration platform, a project can be moving forward at all hours of the day. Create things like reliable utensils for the disabled, a way for denizens to find clean drinking water in rural villages, refreshable braille displays for image text and a smart home to build a sustainable community. Or go beyond that and create something that has never been seen before.

The first round of the Hackaday Prize is a chance to pitch an idea and submit a Design Concept. Then we give you 4 more Hackaday Prize challenges to run with; choose to enter any or all Challenges. 5 challenges run in series (one after the other) and each challenge lasts just 6 weeks. The Best Product challenge runs simultaneously with all 5 challenges.

Work alone or collaborate as a team. Big things start with just an idea. 20 projects will be chosen from each of the 6 rounds and awarded $1000 per project. At the end of all 6 rounds, 120 projects in total will advance to the finals where 6 top prizes will be awarded, totaling $250,000!

  • One (1) Grand Prize: $50,000.
  • One (1) Best Product Prize: $30,000.
  • One (1) Second Prize: $20,000.
  • One (1) Third Prize: $15,000.
  • One (1) Fourth Prize: $10,000.
  • One (1) Fifth Prize: $5,000.
  • One Hundred Twenty (120) Finalist Prizes: up to one hundred twenty (120) submissions which advance to the final round will be awarded a cash prize of $1,000.

Prototype something that will become the next big thing. Awaken your inner entrepreneur and develop a physical, tangible thing that will shake up the industry. Outstanding contestants will have the opportunity to be featured in a Hackaday article.

20 Best Product finalists will win $1000 each. To move into the finalist arena, contestants will be required to submit three prototype replicas for judging. The team or person that wins the Best Product Prize will win $30k and an opportunity to interview for a residency at the Supplyframe Design Lab. A Design Lab residency comes with a materials budget, mentoring, and the use of world class equipment such as injection molding, milling and 3D printing machines.
