During 9 years of activity, the Foundation has implemented many impressive projects. It financed and conducted, together with a team from the Department and General and Transplant Surgery of the Jesus Child Hospital and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, pioneer research on endoscopic pancreatic islet transplantation under the gastric mucosa. It was the first such venture in the world, which a few years later resulted in successful transplantations in several patients.
The Foundation organized many scientific conferences, symposia and trainings in which participated Medical University of Warsaw doctors and nurses, employees of the Warsaw University of Technology and of the Nencki Institute. Scientists cooperating with the Foundation were among others participating in the theoretical study of medical security for a manned mission to Mars – the project was carried out in cooperation with Mars Society Poland.
What are we working on?
Currently, the Foundation is working on the 3D printing of the bionic pancreas and is the leader of the Bionic Consortium, where it cooperates with the Warsaw Medical University, Institute of Experimental Biology of the Nencki Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw University of Technology, Jesus Child Hospital and MediSpace Ltd. The scientific team strives to create a bionic pancreas – an organ that will enable people with diabetes to function normally and will also replace the need for chronic insulin therapy. The project is financed by the National Centre for Research and Development under the program “Prevention and treatment of civilization diseases”, and its value is estimated at over PLN 24 million!
As part of its activity, the Foundation also joined the creation of a social educational program. In 2017, a nationwide campaign “Wean off sugar” co-financed by the Ministry of Health was carried out. This action was aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge about the importance of a healthy diet, physical activity and self-control in the fight against diabetes. In addition, the Foundation’s team of experts runs a blog devoted to the above topics.
The Foundation team is formed by young scientists full of enthusiasm. Innovators who want to sign up on the pages of history. Twelve specialists in the field of medical, biological and chemical sciences, who share a common idea and a deep conviction that it is Poles who can become the creators of breakthrough medical therapies. In addition, the Foundation’s support is provided by numerous volunteers, whose involvement is an additional motivation to take on new challenges.
