Type A Machines helped pioneer the 3D printing industry, founded in 2012 as an early adopter of the RepRap movement. The Type A Machines Series 1 3D Printer is the only professional modular and extensible 3D printer. The Series 1 has the largest build volume in its class, with one full cubic foot of print space, and is part of a scalable Print Pod additive manufacturing system consisting of six Series 1 Pro printers.

The company was founded by Type A Machines' CTO Andrew Rutter in January 2012 as a result of his wife’s request that he remove his 3D printer being designed and built on their dining room table. In order to accommodate his commute, he designed it to fit the trunk of his compact car and still deliver the maximum build volume. His innate knack for improving technology and designing for practicality quickly caught the eye of other makers and Type A Machines was born, with Espen Sivertsen, CEO, and Stefani Pellinen-Chavez, CFO, soon joining the team.
Based out of WestGate Center in San Leandro, California, Type A hosts the Bay Area Advanced Manufacturing Hub, the world's largest 3D incubator under one roof. Comprised of more than 15 member organizations, BAAM connects and leverages the members' full range of hardware, product and services to provide customers with a seamless 3D ecosystem.
