Du Pont Launches High Performance Materials for Filament Extrusion 3D Printing

After testing the market through an early collaboration with Taulman 3D, DuPont is launching its own range of High Performance Materials for 3D printing, enabling greater design freedom and reduced product development cycles, allowing for rapid prototyping, part production and mass customization.

Du Pont Materials, Now in Filament Form

DuPont Hytrel, DuPont Zytel and DuPont Surlyn have earned reputations as industry standards for a variety of applications due to their high quality, reliability and proven performance in a wide range of innovative designs. Proven over decades of use, these performance materials are now available in filament form for 3D printing. DuPont Performance Materials seeks to help manufacturers take advantage of the possibilities of 3D printing with proven products that are known and trusted around the world.

Du Pont’s Hytrel combines the flexibility of rubber with the strength and processability of thermoplastics. It is a TPC-ET thermoplastic elastomer, a versatile copolyester. It combines resilience, and heat and chemical resistance with strength and durability. Parts made with Hytrel thermoplastic elastomer resin can flex in multiple directions, cycle after cycle, long after rubber would break. A prime example is the Constant Velocity Joint (CVJ) boot, an automotive component that is subject to an average of 150,000 miles of pounding, and a wide range of temperatures. Hytrel is an excellent choice when innovative new designs require creation of unique parts with multiple performance characteristics, since it can be processed using many thermoplastic methods.

Zytel is a nylon resin materials for a range of performance needs, from stiffness to heat resistance. Zytel products offer continuing innovation across industries ranging from automotive to consumer electronics. The spectrum of Zytel nylon resin grades helps our customers select the right materials for each project, from high performance polyamide resin resisting aging in high-heat automotive engine parts to applications requiring stiffness, such as hand-held consumer electronics.

Surlyn is an Ionomer Resin Providing clarity, toughness, and versatility. It is a leading choice for food, cosmetic, medical device, and skin and stretch packaging— as well as in golf balls and industrial applications. Known for its outstanding clarity, toughness, and light weight, DuPont Surlyn ionomer resin is a reliable, cost-effective solution for a range of innovative packaging and other applications. For food packaging, Surlyn® provides low-temperature seal initiation, excellent hot tack strength, and puncture resistance. It seals through contaminants, helps reduce leakers, and increases line speeds. For cosmetics and medical device packaging, it provides clarity, formability, and scratch resistance. It is an attractive, lightweight alternative to clamshell and blister packaging. Surlyn is also used as the surface layer for golf balls, ski boots, and overmolded bottles. Its standard processing options include blown film, cast film, sheet, extrusion coating, and injection molding. Surlyn ionomer resin is available in a variety of grades, including some that help downgauge multi-layer structures and optimize material usage. Surlyn® also contributes to sustainability efforts by helping reduce waste by providing packaging integrity.
