Maker Faire Barcelona Opens Season for 3D Printing Leading to IN(3D)STRY in October

3D Printing is a big part of making and in Barcelona this often blends seamlessly with advanced industrial manufacturing. For this reason IN(3D)USTRY, the leading show for industrial additive manufacturing in Southern Europe, which is scheduled for next October 3th to the 5th at Fira Barcelona, was among the organizers of the fourth Maker Faire Barcelona, which took place last June 17th and 18th.

Barcelona is not only one of the most international cities in the world it is also one of the very hearts of the European – and by extension the global – Maker movement. The Fab Lab Barcelona is the first in Europe and among the largest in the world. In 2014 the city hosted FAB10, one of the most important Fab Conferences ever. A public network of Fab Labs (Ateneus de Fabricació) are transforming the city’s productive model in areas such as Les Corts, Nou Barris and Barceloneta.

Fira Barcelona also hosts a number of other key events that bring together technology, industry and creativity. The Maker Faire Barcelona can also count Sonar+D, the most important event for music technology in the World, as well as Iaac, the Catalan Institute for Advanced Architecture among its organizers. The synergies among all these and several other key players are clear. As clear as the interest for HP – a main sponsor of both the Maker Faire and IN(3D)USTRY – as the company made Barcelona home to its global 3D printing division, which focuses on production but has always worked closely with makers as well in order to continue to innovate by thinking outside the box about 3D printing and its applications.

The Maker Faire saw the participation of leading international experts that presented and discussed the latest results and contributions in education, society, and economics. Barcelona has embraced the digital revolution as the host of large events such as the Mobile World Congress, the Smart City ExpoSonarIAM, among others, which bring thousands of visitors to the city every year to celebrate digital innovation and creativity. Maker Faire Barcelona is not just another Maker Faire, or another event in the city, it is the celebration of a new vision for a productive city that a world capital in design, innovation, architecture, urbanism and creativity.

While Sonar+D and the Maker Faire focus on the impact that technology has on cities and people, the INDUSTRY WEEK series of events that will act as a backdrop for IN(3D)USTRY will bring together over 50,000 operators from to explore how new technologies such as additive manufacturing will enable advanced manufacturing industries such as aerospace, energy, automotive and medical can become more efficient, productive and sustainable.

During the last 10 years Barcelona has been consolidating its position in the world of the maker movement. Barcelona completes an ecosystem of Fab Labs, Maker Spaces, companies, startups, associations and cooperatives that are looking into a different future, a future in which citizens are the owners of their own destiny, and in which collaboration is one of the key values to make it happen.

This fourth edition of Maker Faire Barcelona brought together Barcelona’s creative and innovation communities, understanding them as part of an ecosystem that holds the potential to transform how we will live, work and play in our cities, through the democratization of technology.
