OTHR Designer Reimagines and Crafts a Fruit Bowl in 3D Printed Porcelain

The traditional fruit bowl is reimagined with curiosity and humor by Saif Faisal Design Workshop, from Bangalore, India.  Crafted in black or white 3D Printed Porcelain this Numbered Edition takes advantage of the 3D printing process to create a durable porcelain form only viable with this technology.

Saif_-_OTHR_50-50_2560x1890_1_fsj9cuLoup began with a fresh look at an everyday object: the fruit bowl. Its abstract shape expresses its function only when occupied; otherwise, its purpose is left to the user’s imagination. Whether on the mantle or in use, this pared-down kitchen tool adds a subtle elegance to any room. A container to all, this fruit bowl is reduced to its most essential form. Its minimal material and clean aesthetic prove the Loup just as effective as its cumbersome predecessors.

In the ‘Silicon Valley’ of India, Saif Faisal Design Workshop distills the designer’s diverse interests into coherent forms. Part of an emerging group of avant-garde Indian designers, Saif opposes the pervading ‘Jugaad’ sensibility of his culture. With skills honed in the classroom and on the racetrack, Saif’s socially-conscious design looks towards a future where tech and craft coexist.

“It was the use of ceramics and metal which was very attractive,” Saif said of working with OTHR. “Also, the principles of sustainability. The initial line of objects caught my eye for their simple and subtle calmness.”

Designing opposite the pervading sensibility in India— ‘Jugaad,’ a culture of work-around solutions— Saif is part of a generation focused on quality and longevity. In his own words, it’s a group of “avant-garde designers with fresh perspective, taking a sensible and progressive attitude towards design.” With architecture skills honed in the classroom and mechanical skills perfected on the racetrack, Saif’s socially-conscious design looks towards a bright future in which technology and craftsmanship peacefully coincide.
