(September 19, 2016)- The EinScan-S is equipped with two scan modes: the first is the fully automatic mode and the second is the free or manual scan mode. We recommend using the Automatic Scan mode for smaller objects that fit within the 200mm scanning (7.87-inch cube). For larger objects that fit within 700X700X700mm (2.3-foot cube), we recommend using the manual mode. On occasion, it may be necessary to automatically scan oversize parts on the turntable that exceed maximum factory recommendations. This article will provide guidance on how to extend this scan range to handle oversize parts.
The “Continue Scan” Operation
The EinScan-S 3D scanner has a function called “Continue Scan” and it is this function that provides the key to scanning oversized parts. The main function of continuous scanning is that when the scanner finishes the first round of data collection, a user can press the continue scan button to initiate a second round. The continuous scan function ensures that the next pass will be perfectly aligned with the previous pass and so on. There are no limits to continuous scanning so users can add as many rounds as may be necessary to capture all the features and details of their oversized parts.
How continuous scanning helps capture oversized parts?
According to the projection light theory of the EinScan-S, we know that the Turntable Scan Volume is 200mm in Diameter by 150mm in Height. This means that target objects must fit within a 200mm diameter by 150mm high cylinder. If we try to scan an object that is 200mm high, we will miss the top 50mm of the part.
So, if you want to automatically scan oversize parts, you have to scan the object multiple times in different orientations. The EinScan-S continuous scan function allows you to digitally capture 3D objects because it takes care of the automatic alignment of these multiple setups.
How to use Continuous Scanning… a practical example
Let’s take a look at an example of how to automatically scan an oversize object using the EinScan-S turntable.
This wood sculpture’s size is 220x125x129mm.
As you can see from the picture, we only captured part of the digital model with the first scan because the part was 50mm too high. To capture the entire model, we will need 3 setups as shown below.
The EinScan-S continuous scan function ensures that the most current scan data is automatically aligned with the previous scan. In this example, we needed to place the part in three different orientations to accurately capture all the object details and features. When we finished our third and final scan, the EinScan-S automatically created our ready-to-use, well-aligned mesh. It’s important to note that each round produces more data which can result in longer mesh processing time. So, it’s advisable to be efficient with your scanning passes to create your 3D models competently and accurately.
